"What's A Dealer's Signature?"

I FOUND THE BELOW as an answer in the "General Roulette System Gambling Discussion List" (see Links page) and as I thought it was an excellent explanation, I asked the author - Jesse F Knight - for permission to publish it. He was gentle enough to give me that permission so I hereby publish the mail in full:

A dealer signature, or dealer's signature, if you prefer, is where after a certain number of spins you can detect that the dealer has a predictable way of spinning the ball so that it falls into a certain segment of the wheel more than average.

The best way to think about it is by example. ÊSay on spin 1 the dealer releases the ball at 0 and eventually the ball lands on 00. ÊThen next spin the dealer releases the ball on 22 and it lands on 6. ÊThe third time the dealer releases the ball on number 3 and it lands on 16. ÊFrom this simplistic example we can see that the ball is landing half way around the wheel. ÊSo we would watch when the dealer released the ball--say the dealer releases on 32--I would then probably bet 19-31-18, the segment directly across.

A second way players use dealer signature is to simply look at a scoreboard and see if there is a pattern to the numbers. ÊSay bottom number is 7, then you have 5 above it, then 24, then 00. ÊIf you look at the wheel you will see that from 7 to 5 is four slots, then from 5 to 24 is 5 slots, then from 24 to 00 is four slots and so forth. ÊYou might discover that 75% of the numbers on the scoreboard are advancing 4 or 5 slots. ÊSo you look at the last number spun, say it is 14, then you would count ahead 4 and 5 slots and probably bet 9 and 26. Again, this is simplistic, but I think you get the idea.

There are surely more ideas of how to use dealer signatures than these. But the basic idea is that all dealers will develop patterns that allow you to predict where the ball will land. ÊYou focus on the dealer, not on the wheel and not with any particular system in mind. ÊEach dealer of course will be different.

The concept of a dealer signature is still controversial in roulette with many doubting that such a thing exists. ÊI personally think it does, but I have no hard evidence. Ê In the Nevada I think dealer signature is hard to detect because casinos move the dealers around so much. ÊIn many casinos the dealers will only work 40 minutes or so just once a day at a wheel. ÊSo you need to know when a dealer is going to work at a wheel for that day to build up any reliable data. ÊIn Europe I think it might be easier because the same dealers are at the wheels for all evening long (excepting breaks of course), so it must be easier to detect dealer signature. ÊI don't know about Australia or the Far East since I've not played there or even other parts of America.
